Happy New Year!

Hi, this is me, Charley! Lois took this picture of me right around Christmas. I remember because there were things in a bag in the closet that smelled really good, like treats. I didn't get into them because I know better. I wait until everybody is around the Christmas tree, opening packages and then I get mine! And I know just what to do, just rip it open, find the treat and enjoy!

I Meet Gus!

So one day this nice lady brought her Standard poodle just to see me! We had a lot of fun running around in the back yard. His name is Gus and he is a blue Standard poodle, just like me. I got so excited, although Gus was definitely laid back and stood there considering my antics.

Here comes cool weather

I can't seem to get enough walks these days. I know Lois, my owner, takes a lot of time making paintings, teaching art classes and working at the Home Depot. But pretty much daily we do a walk--either around the neighborhood, out in Carolina State Park here in Wilmington, or on the beach at Fort Fisher. I get so excited! Lately, I've been going over to my leashes hanging by the front door, getting up on my hind legs and just pawing them.

Lois sees me but doesn't jump up and take me out. Perhaps this message isn't working. I may have to try something else....

I Kill A Rat!!!!

Wow, this rat came into the yard and I killed it! I whirled around it when it was trying to run away and I grabbed it! I shook it real hard and stomped on it with my front paws. I grabbed it again and shook it hard again!
It was really hot that day and boy, was I tired afterwards! What a work out! But the rat was dead, I made sure of that and all is safe again in the back yard!

Recipe From The Healthy Dog Cook Book

Lois got this recipe from one of her art students. She brought a sample for me. Ummmm good! Give a try!

1 1/2 cup all purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup soft butter
1/2 cup corn oil
1 jar baby food--meat,beef, strained
4 eggs
2-3 strips beef jerky

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour and 8x5x3" loaf pan. Cream butter until smooth. Add corn oil, baby food, eggs, and mix until smooth. Mix in dry ingredients until smooth. Crumble beef jerky and fold into batter.
Pour batter into the loaf pan and bake for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Cool on a wire rack for 15 minutes. Ice with plain yogurt or cottage cheese and store in fridge.

I'm gettin' good at tricks! I can weave through walking legs, stand on my hind feet, roll over, sit up, bow down, spin to the left, spin to the right and jump through a hoop. And that's not all!!

Lois took a picture of me dozing in the sun near the front door. It was a nice Spring day and I was hoping we would go out for a walk, soon. Then she did a painting of me, from the photo. She teaches an art class called "Paint From A Photo."

She's going to do another one of me soon. It will be from a photo of my absolutely adorable face! Maybe I'll be famous!

Well, I'm four years old and counting. We went out to the woods today and had a great walk.
I just want to give my love to everybody (as most dogs do.)

Keep thinking about good pet food and read the ingredients. Don't get anything with by-products in it because these can be toxic for your dog, especially if those ingredients are listed on the first line--you know that is pretty much the main ingredients.

All you pet owners, take care. If you want to keep your pets longer, buy good, pure food.

Dog Kisses Recipe

Hey, now I'm four. How handsome can a guy get! This is what my owner did for me on my fourth birthday. I got treats and a new collar at the Island Pet Shop. Then, we went for a nice walk in Carolina Beach Park. After getting hosed down to get rid of the sand on my legs and belly (I don't much appreciate that!) and toweled off--why then we had ice cream!

Here's what Lois makes for me. She says she feels bad for how we raise and slaughter pigs, steers, cows and chickens--so, I'm eating less meat these days. I guess she's right. She's usually right...

DOG KISSES
(Charley’s favorite)

3 c. oat bran
2 c. quick oats, uncooked
1 tbsp.baking powder
2 eggs
1 c. peanut butter
½ c. canola oil
1 tsp. salt
1 apple, cored, sliced and steamed until soft
3 medium sweet potatoes, peeled, sliced and steamed until soft
3 c. unbleached flour
1 ¼ c. plain soy milk (or 2% milk)

Apple and sweet potatoes can be steamed together.
In a large bowl, with a large spoon, mix sweet potatoes/apple and milk together.
Add the remaining ingredients and mix well.
Drop dough in small spoonfuls on an oiled pie pan or cookie sheet.
Bake at 400 for twenty minutes or until kisses are lightly brown on top.

Dog kisses in pie pans can be covered with foil and stacked in the freezer. Bake one at a time as needed, removing foil and baking at 325 for 30 minutes or until kisses are lightly brown on top.

It's Thanksgiving!

It was just three years ago that my owner, Lois, picked me out from a litter in Nokomis FL and brought me to Wilmington, NC. Boy, I sure did whine a lot , but I was just a pup! That Thanksgiving, I met Piper, my owner's brother's Standard poodle. She sure was pretty!
I have to say, just to catch up, that I haven't been to Agility for several months. I think Lois finally got fed up with me not following orders. It's just so much fun to do the tunnel, dog walk, weaving and stuff, but I found the other dogs distracting and much more interesting!

Ohh, well, we went up North to Lake Ontario in October. What a trip! Days and days on the road, but then there were the service areas and nice motels to stay in There's a really cool video Lois did that says it all.

Yes, it was fun, but I came home with mange! Yeah, well, I ran around a big field in Massachusetts and found a dead animal that was very interesting.....
Then I got the itches and the scritches and tonight, Lois gave me a bath with some really bad smelling stuff that is supposed to get rid of those things I can't see that are making me it itch. Oh, I feel better all ready... She had to get some kind of cream to put on for something called scabies. Sounds kind of cute, but I guess it is the human form of mange. Bad critters!

My Birthday--Again!!!

Hey, it's July 2nd and guess what, it's my birthday (again!!) Now, I'm THREE!

Here's my official birthday pictures.

Notice, in one I look kind of queasy....
It's been hot here and I didn't feel like eating the nice breakfast my owner, Lois. fixed for me this morning.
She teaches art classes and after the art class was over this morning, I felt more like eating. Now I want more!
Yesterday I grabbed a chocolate cookie that had fallen to the floor. I was so quick, Lois didn't get a chance to get it first. It was really good! I know chocolate is bad for dogs. I felt OK, though (it was a very little cookie!)

If there is a moral to this story, it is, you have to keep all that bad stuff away from your pets--stuff like chocolate and raisins.
And be careful what toys you buy for your dog. Lois got me a ball with a squeeker in it and I quickly chewed it out and nearly ate it. I could have choked on it, but she saw what I was doing and quickly to it away!
I sometimes wonder what has happened to the dog that was next door. I hope she's OK. It's really hot here again, and I hope she is in a shady yard with plenty of water and soft grass and stuff to lay on.

Yeah, well let me tell you about me in Agility Class. I pretty much do what I want, but I have fun!
Sometimes everybody says, "Charley! Stop that!"
I think they don't like it that I run around the agility yard and have so much fun.

Hey, the weather's gettin' better. Even though I was zooming again in Agility (so were the other dogs!) I got to go to the beach with my owner, Lois. Did I explain zooming? It's when a dog is off the leash, the owner asks the dog to jump a hurdle, climb an A-frame, jump through a tire, or whatever and the dog just takes off--like me! Sometimes I just get so excited and the other dogs being there just adds to it! I'm slowly beginning to realize, I don't get treats for zooming, running around the Agility yard like crazy. So, then I go back to work.

They're gone! The dog in the cage next door has disappeared. The family moved all of their stuff out and, well, they're gone!
My owner, Lois, still talks about the dog, Coco. It is going down to 20 degrees tonight, she says. That's pretty cold for North Carolina, I guess. I haven't been groomed for a while, so my coat is nice and thick. I really don't like the cold, though. And I don't like the snow coming down like it did this morning. I kept jumping up and trying to eat the snowflakes. They disappeared in my mouth!

Speaking of jumping up, I did really well in Agility today. At least, that's what they all said. For me, it was a lot of fun, pretty much like usual. I guess they liked that I didn't run around the Agility Yard too much. And I got so interested that when they were talking, I just did some things by myself--for fun! I jumped through the tire, I climbed the A-Frame, I jumped a couple hurdles and I ran through some tunnels.

I like Agility! And everybody gave me lots of treats. My owner, Lois, has a hard time keeping up with me. There was talk of a "handler." (?)

Can't wait for the next Agility thing!

It's pretty cold out there in the yard, even for North Carolina! My friend next door has a chain link kennel, a dog house and some plywood around to stop the wind. Lately I've hear her coughing and my owner looked through the slats of the fence. She said the dog was breathing heavily. Our neighbors don't pay much attention to her. She get some water and food is all I know. She barks sometimes and looks really lonely. She's an older dog. I hope I don't end up like that when I am older.

My owner is upset again, about the dog. Then, she mentioned the ASPCA. Maybe they can do something...

Hi, well it's the new year, I guess. I did really well in Agility class today. You know that my owner, Lois and I have been consigned to private classes because I was so disruptive in the regular Intermediate class with originally signed up for.

So, when I get there, the trainer tells me to "Go play," and I run around really fast to get all of my energy out. Then, I settle down to do the tunnels, the hurdles, the teeter, the a frame and all that good stuff which I really love to do, once I am focused!

I did really well today. I went out up down the A frame three times and then some more on my own because I loved it so. I did the tunnel and the tunnel with the sleeve well, too. Even though it is January, it was pretty warm this morning and what with my big poodle coat on, I got hot!

Lois says she will take videos of me doing the agility yard soon, so you all can see them!

Coco next door is still in her pen and is very sad. My owner's friend convinced her owners that she needed some straw in her dog house for when it gets really cold. She brought to bags of straw for Coco. We can't tell if they put it in the dog house because they've got plywood up all over her pen.

I hope she is all right.

Hey, I was sooo on fire tonight. It was the first Intermediate Agility Class! I'm on my way! Except, strange things were happening. Just because I didn't listen to my owner, Lois's commands and started running around the Agility area at top speed, the trainer and my owner got mad.

I've done this before, sort of settled down, and then did my courses. But, hey, tonight, there was a new dog, there, Oz and was he peppy or what! So I just had to want to play with him and show everybody how I could run faster than anybody around the Agility area!

Then, I heard it. Bad dog! No one could catch me, but--BAD DOG! I stopped in my tracks. What did I do? Well, I settled down a bit and did my jumps really good. But all the other exercises I missed....
My owner was not real happy. I didn't get all the treats I usually get.
Now I'm dog tired......

Oh how I hate to get up in the morning.
Oh how I hate to get out of bed...

My owner, Lois, sings that to me most mornings. I guess she wants to get back at me for my dancing around, wanting to chase toys late at night! She says that her other Standard poodles she had crashed around ten PM so what's wrong with me?

Yeah, I do keep going until she turns off the old movies and says-"OK, Charles, it's time for seepy." That means sleeping, for any of you that are not into human/puppy-dog talk. She used that word when she got me as a pup. I'm older now, have gone through Dog Obedience Class, Canine Good Citizen Class and Beginner Agility Class. So I know that if she would say "sleep" instead of "seepy" I would, uh, understand.

OK, then I just check the closets, the baseboards in the kitchen and I spend about three minutes sitting at the foot of her bed looking very vigilant while she reads her book. Then, I go to my bed and settle down, like I'm going to go to sleep, I guess. Later on, at night, I sneak up on the bed, uh, just to make sure everything is all right (and that quilt is so nice and soft!) That's where you'll find me in the morning!

Oh boy, am I having fun! I jump through tires, run through tunnels and walk up really high boards, then come down again.

I guess everybody is working on my doing something from a command--just like my previous Dog Obedience and Canine Good Citizen classes. But, even though I heard TUNNEL! or CHUTE! or UP! I'm so excited, I just get to running around in circles and everyone in the class has to wait until my owner or the agility trainer catches me.

Hey, what's wrong with that? Although, I noticed that the other people and dogs don't look too happy. I guess they are waiting for me to get over running around in circles and then go on to something else.

But I get so excited!

Canine Good Citizen

I just finished my "Canine Good Citizen" class a couple weeks ago. I haven't taken the final test yet, it's on Sunday, and my owner, Lois, usually works on Sunday at the Home Depot, so I don't think we will be there for the test.

It was fun, though. I really like being with all the other dogs. Most of them were in the Beginner Obedience class with me, so, we're all buddies. I like Odie, who's a young German Shepherd and Reggae, who is a black lab.

This is what we practiced and had to learn:

1. Accept a friendly stranger. I had to allow someone to approach and shake hands with my owner. I had to sit and not jump up on the new person, or show any shyness or resentment.

2. Sit politely for petting. I had to allow a friendly stranger to pet me. I had to either sit at my owner's side or stand still to be petted. Hey, that was fun. I love to be petted. I couldn't jump up or act goofy, though.

3. Appearance and grooming. I had to accept being groomed and examined by a stranger. I had to be brushed, which I was good for. I didn't like having my feet and ears looked at, but my owner told me to sit, so I sat still. Whew!

In some of the classes, there was loud music and different sounds like sirens going. We had to walk next to our owners around lots of objects, like a baby doll in a stroller and a dish full of kibbles. We had to walk on little platforms, and one was on rockers, so that it tipped forward and back when I walked on it. It took me a while to get used to that one!

We practiced "stay" a lot. Our owners would tell us to stay, then walk away. Then we would have to wait for the "come!" command. I was pretty good at that. My owner has practiced that a lot with me.

Also, we practiced the "heel" command. That means I have to walk right next to my owner. When she stops and says, "Sit." I have to stop right then and there and sit down. I pretty good at that.

We always get lots of treat in class, usually cheese or little bits of frankfurter. When we practice at home, my owner gives me little pieces of cheese when I do what she says. Hey, learning isn't so bad!

Guess what. Next class is agility! I don't really know what it is. I think I get to run around, though. I love to run, so it should be lots of fun!

Dog Next Door-Update

The dog next door is back. It turns out that he is a she. Her owners have her in a chain link kennel. She never gets out. They feed her and she has water...I know, because my owner, Lois, called Animal Control to find out what was going on.

Animal Control says its OK. Even though the dog doesn't get out ever, and the family plays in the back yard swimming pool and ignores her, I guess its OK. They have another dog that stays inside. Yeah, that dog has shade when it is 90 degrees outside. The one in the chain link kennel has hot concrete around her little dog house, and until the shade of the house comes around, she stays in that little house--out of the sun....

My owner gets mad, then sad, because of the dog next door. She has talked to the owners, but they shouted and were not nice. So, my owner says there is nothing she can do now. Animal Control says as long as the dog has water, food and shelter and is in pretty good shape, my owner is powerless.

When my owner gets upset, then I get upset. After all I'm a two year old Standard Poodle and I'm very interactive.

For me, well my take is that the dog next door is just doing what all of us dogs do...living life. You know, we have no great aspirations except to love and be loved. Sometimes that happens with us, and sometimes not. That is the nature of us. A lot of us are born and don't ever have happy lives. But then, I guess that is the same for anything living thing, including humans...

I'm two, and I've just spent a whole lot of time thinking!

They say us Poodles are thinking dogs.

I would rather chase a stick....

Lawns and Chewing Gum

Sugar-free gum like Orbit, that has Xylitol as an ingredient Is very bad and poisonous for dogs.
This is a little scary for me, because, when I walk with my owner, Lois, out in the beautiful Carolina Beach forest, I can smell gum a mile away and will zero in on it, grab it and start chewing! Lois says, she's going to watch very carefully, and give the command, "Leave it!" if she sees me going after gum. I learned that command in Beginning Dog Obedience. I also learned "Take it!" which is more fun.

LAWNS
Not only that, dogs exposed to lawns that are treated with weed and feed fertilizer/herbicides four or more times a year are doubly at risk for canine lymphoma. And the Journal of The American Veterinary Medical Association says that certain breeds of dogs, when exposed to chemically treated lawns, were four to seven times more likely to suffer from bladder cancer. That stuff we put on our lawns to make them nice and green, goes into our waterways and pollutes our environment, too. Oh boy. I'm glad my owner doesn't use that stuff!

If you are using weed and feed fertilizer, think again!

I'm Two!

Yesterday was my birthday. My owner, Lois, gave me a haircut, which wasn't very much fun. But then we had some hot dogs and cheese. Later we had some popcorn.

I got my Beginner Obedience certificate April. I did pretty good.
Then, we enrolled in the Canine Good Citizen classes. I did all right in that, I think, but we haven't been tested yet.

My "sister" Samantha visited last week. She is my owner's daughter and I like her a lot because she plays with me and gives me treats.

Here I am on the outside looking in. I've been out chasing lizards in the back yard and now I want to know what's for supper.

Wow, I just found out that next month we (me and my owner, Lois) are going to obedience school! I don't know what this is, but it probably will be fun. She said something on the phone about agility, too. I don't know what that means, but I think that will be fun, too.

The dog next door

Ok, some new people moved in next door and they have a dog. We bark at each other through the thin slats of the fence. When my owner, Lois, lets me out, he's always out there. I don't think he ever is allowed in the house. I noticed that they keep him tied and close to the fence and that he is pretty much always there. He seems kind of bored and barks a lot. I wonder if he gets toys and petting and stuff like I do.

Tonight, there was a lot of shouting next door. The dog had escaped! We live near a really busy road and it was rush hour. The people were running after him, but he was very fast, like me! Then it got dark.

Tonight, when Lois let me out, there was no barking. He's gone and I wonder where he is. Maybe he got hit by a car on the highway--I hope not--but it happens. Maybe he'll find a better family that will let him in the house, play with him and give him chew bones and stuff....

Christmas was wonderful! I got alot of little biscuits all wrapped up with paper and ribbon. It took me a long time to open each one! There was a beautiful Christmas tree. I'm just a boy, but I am good when my owner, Lois, has to go to work at The Home Depot. I never touch anything.
I would like to get the cat next door, though. Her name is Buttercup and she sits on MY front step. I bark like crazy, but she won't move until she is good and ready.
Yesterday, because the weather was very warm, even for North Carolina, out came the sprinkler to water the flowers. I LOVE the sprinkler and try to bite the water as it comes around.
I wish all the dogs in the world a Happy New Year!

Another Great Dog Biscuit Recipe That I Like!

I have to say, this is the best one yet!

2 TB. Olive Oil
1 Large carrot, grated
1 Apple, cored and grated
1 Banana, peeled and sliced
3 TB Sunflower seeds
1/2 C. Lowfat Yogurt
4 Egg Yolks
3 TB Peanut Butter
1 C. Oat Bran
2 C. Rolled Oats
1 C. Corn Meal
1 TB. Dried Mint Flakes

OK, well she mixed all of the stuff together. I saw it, although I was busy barking at the cat next door who was prowling around the bushes in front of the house.
Then she put it all in a plastic bag and formed it into a long column, about a foot long or so. She put that in the fridge for a couple hours, during which time we went out to the Carolina Beach Park for a nice time. I saw some lizards and some birds that I wanted to chase...
Anyway, when we got back, she took that column out of the fridge and then cut off the end 1/2" slices. Then she put the slices on baking sheets and put them in the oven which was at 350 degrees. She baked them for about 45 minutes. They smelled great! When they were cool, I got some and they were very tasty. Now, I know some dogs don't do well with the corn ingredients--just a reminder. If that is the case with your dog, just substitute more oats or cooked rice in place of the corn meal. Anyway, I can't wait to see what else she's going to make!

Recipe For Charley's Biscuits

1 apple--washed well, cored and grated coarsely
2/3 cup grated carrots
1/4 cup sunflower seeds--unsalted and ground in a blender or coffee grinder
1 cup rolled oats
1 cup whole wheat flour
1/2 cup corn meal--stone ground, no other ingredients, please
1/2 tsp. salt
1 tsp. garlic powder, just pure garlic powder with no other ingredients, please
2 tblsp. olive oil
1 egg
2 tblsp. peanut butter --like Smuckers, no sugar or other ingredients, please

OK, she mixes all of this stuff together in a big bowl. She adds some water if it's too dry and doesn't stick together when she pinches the stuff with her fingers. Then she makes two long, round columns about an inch an a half in diameter. She sticks them in the fridge for a couple hours or maybe until she's ready to bake (it could be a day or two).
She takes them out and makes 1/4" slices with a very sharp knife. She put these little round guys on a baking sheet and bakes 'em at 350 degree F. for about 20 minutes or until they're browned nicely. Oh boy, that's the part I like the best because they smell good and I sit there and just wait until they come out of the oven and cool alittle. Then I can have one! I get a couple for breakfast every morning, too, until they're all gone and she has to make more.....

If you check the dog food ingredients listed on the label, you can find a good dog food that uses healthy preservatives. You may prefer to make your own dog food most of the time using your favorite home made dog food recipes, but even so, you are likely to use commercial dog food now and again. After all, you cook for your family, but if you're like most people, you probably eat fast food now and again!
Unfortunately, not all commercial dogs foods are good for dogs, so you have to choose your food wisely. Good quality isn't ensured by brand names or high prices. Fortunately, the list of dog food ingredients on the label can help you determine quality. Be sure to check the type of preservative used by the manufacturer. Commercial dog foods need preservatives, but only some of them are healthy for your dog.
Natural preservatives should be used in a healthy food. The presence of antioxidants like vitamin E and vitamin C on the list of dog food ingredients is a good sign. They are healthy preservatives. You don't need to worry about feeding your dog vitamin E and vitamin C.
Chemical antioxidants like ethoxyquin, BHA (butylated hydroxyanisole), and BHT (butylated hydroxytoluene) should not be used. Both BHA and BHT are considered hazardous in the laboratory by OSHA (Occupation Safety and Health Administration); they are linked to several kinds of cancer.
Ethoxyquin is particularly dangerous. This chemical is used in making rubber. It is labeled a pesticide by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, and has been banned for use in foods intended to be eaten by humans. Unfortunately, it can still legally be used for preserving animal feeds. It's quite inexpensive, so manufacturers of cheap dog foods often use it.
You don't want to feed these chemicals to your dog! If you see them on the list of dog food ingredients, don't purchase that dog food.
